The famous American pediatrician Chris Rowan examines the impact of modern technology on the development of children. JiJi.ng deals with you the main statements by Rowan. So, read and be perfect parents!

Incorrect brain stimulation

The child’s brain increases three times in size from birth to two years and continues to grow up to 21 years. Brain development is determined at an early age environmental stimulation or lack of it. Stimulating the brain by overexposure to gadgets, internet or TV, as studies show, it is associated with cognitive delays, increased impulsiveness, reduced ability to self-regulation.

Delay in development

Static pastime entails a lack of movement and can lead to delay physical and mental development. This problem was evident in the US where every third child goes to school with developmental delays, which clearly reflected on performance. Mobility also improves attention and the ability to learn new things. Scientists say that using of electronic equipment harms the development of children and adversely affects their ability to learn.

Television and computer games – an example of non-food habits that are directly related to the epidemic of excess weight. Among children who indulge in portable devices, obesity occurs in 30% more often. One in four young Canadians and one in three American youth suffer syndrome “broad bones”.

Children with overweight in 30% of cases will be diagnosed with diabetes, and in addition, this person has a higher risk of early stroke or heart attack, seriously reducing the duration of life. Scientists are sounding the bell, calling on everyone to keep an eye on the obesity of children, because the first generation of the XXI century is more likely to die before their parents.

60% of parents don’t monitor how closely their child make friends with all kinds of gadgets, and three-quarters of the families allow to take children for an electronics into bed. Glow screen phones, tablets and laptops top prevent sleep, which leads to a reduction of rest periods and sleep deprivation.

Scientists put the lack of sleep on a par with malnutrition: both depletes the body, and thus, adversely affects the assimilation of school lessons.

Mental illness

A great number of foreign studies carried out clear parallels between the video games, the Internet, TV and their negative impact on the psyche of young people. So, gambling causes dissatisfaction of life, increased anxiety and increased depression. World Wide Web, in turn, leads to isolation and the development of phobias. The list of mental illnesses can be easily supplemented with bipolar disorder, psychosis, behavioral disorders, autism and disorders of attachment, that is a violation of close emotional contact with parents.

Repeat the truism: stiffness on TV and in video games is reflected in real life. Just look closely at the participation of physical and sexual violence in today’s online media, movies and television: sex, abuse, torture, torture and murder.

A child receives a finished pattern of behavior, which can be implement in the surrounding reality. And most importantly, a number of studies have come to the same conclusion: violence on the screen has both short-term and long-term effect – aggression can occur not at once.

Digital Dementia

Scientific observations show that enthusiasm for television at the age of one to three years, leading to problems with concentration on the seventh year of life. Children, who can’t concentrate simply loses the opportunity to learn something and remember. A constant flow of information leads to the rapid changes in the brain, and then to dementia – reduction in the loss of cognitive functions previously learned knowledge and skills, and difficulty or inability to purchase new ones.

If parents will to often check mail, shoot monsters and watch soap operas, they will move away from their children. Lack of attention from adults often compensated by all the same gadgets and digital technology. In some cases, the baby itself becomes dependent on portable devices, Internet and television. Every eleventh child aged from 8 to 18 years – the “digital drug addict.”

Harmful radiation

In 2011, the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified radio waves of cellular phones and other wireless devices as a potential carcinogen by defining a group 2B “possibly carcinogenic to humans” factors. However, keep in mind that children are more sensitive to the negative effects because of their brain and the immune system is still developing. Therefore, scientists say, it is impossible to equate the risks for young and already formed body. It also discusses the notion that radio frequency radiation should be reclassified as a 2A (probable carcinogen), and not the current 2B.

Concluding his article, Chris Rowen recommends time limits that are acceptable for children of different ages.
