As you set out to find the best shoes for running, you should first consider the shape of your feet. “Looking at a runner’s foot leads us to what type of shoe they should be in,” explained Smith.
The three main foot types are flat, neutral and high arches.
- Flat feet tend to have fallen arches, making them flexible and prone to overpronation, an inward rolling motion.
- Neutral feet are the most biomechanically sound variety, putting them somewhere in the middle.

- If possible, purchase fitness shoes from a specialty store. The staff will provide valuable input on the type of shoe needed for your sport as well as help with proper fitting. This may cost a premium in price but is worthwhile, particularly for shoes that are used often.
- Try on workout shoes after a workout or run and at the end of the day. Your feet will be at their largest.
- Wear the same type of sock that you will wear for that sport.
- When the shoe is on your foot, you should be able to freely wiggle all of your toes.
- The shoes should be comfortable as soon as you try them on. There is no break-in period.
- Walk or run a few steps in your shoes. They should be comfortable.
- Always re-lace the shoes you are trying on. You should begin at the farthest eyelets and apply even pressure as you create a crisscross lacing pattern to the top of the shoe.
- There should be a firm grip of the shoe to your heel. Your heel should not slip as you walk or run.
- If you participate in a sport three or more times a week, you need a sport-specific shoe.

Determine your play style.
If you play a “serve and volley” style, then you will likely be sliding your back foot along the court during your serve, which means you want a toecap on your tennis shoe to improve durability.
If you play a “baseline” style, then you will likely be running from side to side, which means you want a tennis shoe that has been designed with lateral support in mind.
Determine your most frequent court surface type.
If you intend on playing on a lot of hard surface courts, then your shoes will likely experience a lot of friction and erosion, which means you’ll want to look for tennis shoes that have been designed for durable soles.
If you intend on playing mostly on clay or grass courts, the durability requirements for your tennis shoes won’t be so critical.
Determine your foot type.
This is arguably the most important step in choosing the right tennis shoe. Your foot type will determine how much lateral support and cushioning you will need in your tennis shoe for optimal safety and comfort:
- For supinated feet: You will experience most wear and tear around the heel and toes of your shoes.
- For pronated feet: You will experience most wear and tear around the inside area of the front of the feet.
- For neutral feet: You will experience wear and tear evenly all around the soles of the shoe.
Determine cushioning material type.
Tennis shoes are made with 2 types of cushions: EVA and PU. EVA cushions are lighter and more flexible, but offer less stability and durability. PU cushions are more durable and stable, but tend to be heavier.

Now depending on which position you play, you’ll want a different boot too; play in defence and you’ll want a strong, resilent soccer boot that is going to protect you in the tackle, but play on the wing or up front and you’ll want a lighter boot to evade those challenges and use your speed.
You also have your choice of materials for your boot; leather boots will mould themselves to the shape of your feet, but when it is wet they can stretch out of shape, whilst synthetic boots can be less expensive and are often lighter than leather.
The final choice is the sole type, many players opt for two pair of boots in the season, one for soft ground with interchangable studs and another pair for harder ground that use blades.
