1. What is chapman?
Before we move on to the recipe for chapman, let’s find out how this drink originated and why it’s so popular with Nigerians. According to the legend, this cocktail was invented by a local bartender named Sharpman, and later, when his drink achieved fame, his name gradually transformed into chapman.
There are many reasons for chapman’s popularity. It’s made with very accessible ingredients, doesn’t need hours of cooking, can be made almost instantly in case you’re wondering how to make chapman for a party, and tastes great on hot summer days when everyone needs a refreshment.
2. Ingredients for chapman
In order to make chapman in the most traditional way, you’re going to need:
- Fanta Orange (1 bottle)
- Sprite (1 bottle)
- Grenadine syrup (1 cup)
- Angostura aromatic butter (3 tbsp)
- One lime
- Ice cubes
Most of these items can be found in a nearby store, except for Angostura aromatic bitter, which can prove challenging to find. You can either look for it at large supermarkets, order it online, or substitute it for Alomo bitters, which are much easier to locate at grocery stores.
3. How to prepare chapman
Before starting to make your chapman cocktail, make sure to freeze some ice cubes and chill Fanta and Sprite in the fridge, as chapman tastes best when it’s super cold. It’s advised to prepare chapman in a large jug and then pour it into glasses.
Add the liquid ingredients (Sprite, Fanta, grenadine syrup, and bitters) into the jug and mix with a long spoon. You can taste the drink as you’re adding bitter to know where to stop. If you prefer your drinks sweet, you can add some fresh orange juice, and if you don’t like overly sweet cocktails, add more bitters.
4. How to serve chapman
Pour your chapman drink into individual glasses, add several ice cubes to each glass, and decorate according to your taste. Nearly every chapman drink recipe will tell you to use lime and cucumber slices as decoration, but you can also use orange and lime slices, grapes, and any of your favorite fruit.
In case you’re wondering how to make chapman for kids, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s very easy – simply make a separate jug of chapman without the bitters. To balance out the sweetness, you can add lime or lemon juice.
