Sports brands yearly introduce dozens of sneakers models for everyday wear. Most are inspired by basketball and running, though only some are suitable for professional players. Meanwhile, the basketball designs have lost the reputation of being a street style highlight. Jerry Lorenzo and Leo Chang decided to change the situation.
“So what is the Fear of God?” will you ask. It is the brand that has designed some of the most awaited sneakers of the year – Skylon II. It appeared as the result of the collaboration with Nike and will be available starting from December 15. So let’s find out more.
Fear of God was founded in 2013 by Jerry Lorenzo. He is the main designer of the company, although Lorenzo doesn’t like to be called so. Lorenzo planned to become a sports agent. He was keen on sports style and shopping.
With time, he became less interested in buying. The things he found in the shops seemed less impressive. The closet was full of outfits that didn’t seem that great anymore. Then, the idea of starting the brand came to his mind.
The name of the brand was inspired by a book of Oswald Chambers Lorenzo read as a child. He wanted to have a link with Christianity. Most designs are developed based on Lorenzo’s outfits and preferences. The brand has released five collections so far.
The concept of Fear of God shoes and outfits is based on the reinterpretation of the American classics with its extraordinary mix of styles – traditional and sport, retro and gothic, etc. The collections are released irregularly, and each comes as a limited edition.
In the 80s and 90s, professional sneakers were not an attribute of the game. Teenagers were obsessed with Air Jordans regardless of whether they played basketball or no. They were the best playing sneakers, and they were the coolest shoes ever.
The idea of Fear of God sneakers was a challenge: Lorenzo defied Nike to recreate those nostalgic designs with hi-tech silhouettes. He didn’t want to reconsider the existing models, but to create something from the scratch – something completely original that reflects his vision.
Jerry Lorenzo was granted free rein. Working together with Leo Chang allowed reaching the balanced between the design vision and sports expertise. The result is represented by a technologically luxurious model with the unique design and double heel amortization Zoom Air.
The positioning of the model became the final touch. It is presented by P. J. Tucker. He is the sixth player – the one who sits on the sidelines when the game starts and has the least playing time. Thus, the company shows that they remember about every athlete.
Fear Of God x Nike Air Skylon II
This is the latest model designed in collaboration. It features the retro design that brings back the spirit of the 90s. The sneakers are made of soft leather, suede, and thick nylon. The lacing was equipped with a carabiner so you will spend less time lacing.
