As a rule movies about superheroes are saved for the summer or the period close to Christmas. However, «Black Panther» produced by Marvel and Disney is going to be released on Feb. 16!
This tentpole seems to be the one of opening weekend box-office champions, overshadowing even The Hunger Games (2012) and Beauty and the Beast (2017), as Fandango claims. It also has very high chances of being the largest superhero pre-seller throughout Fandango’s almost two decades’ history, beating even the great Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)!

1. ‘Black Panther’ is going to be the box-office record-breaker!
The tickets for Black Panther are already on sale and the advance sales are by far larger than for any preceding Marvel movies. The new smash hit is definitely going to become one of the greatest movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The first weekend is expected to open with around $120 million box-office revenue, and if it happens, this will be the most significant debut at the home box office of 2018! The top 10 largest domestic opening weekends in 2017 were held by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.51 million), Thor: Ragnarok ($122.74 million) and Spider-Man: Homecoming ($117.03 million).
However, the number of tickets sold in advance doesn’t always indicate the great opening of the movie. For instance, Batman v. Superman’s $166 million home debut wasn’t a record-breaker in terms of superhero movies although it stood quite high on Fandango.
It’s in fact Marvel’s The Avengers that opened in May 2012 has been holding record since then for its incredible opening with $207.4 million.
Nevertheless, we are not saying that Black Panther isn’t going to open really big. According to other source, Hollywood’s tracking services, the movie will debut in the $130 million to $150 million range over the lengthy President’s Day weekend, and this even before the Disney’s promotional boost.
Other movies that had big opening weekends include Ryan Reynolds’ blockbuster Deadpool (2016) with its $132.4 million, Beauty and the Beast with $174.8 million, and The Hunger Games with $152.5 million.
2. What makes “Black Panther” so special?
Black Panther is a unique superhero tentpole because it starts almost exclusively black actors such as Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther as well as:
- Lupita Nyong’o
- Michael B. Jordan
- Daniel Kaluuya
- Letitia Wright
- Winston Duke
- Angela Bassett
- Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis.
Black Panther is most likely to be among the top 5 Marvel debuts, but that’s just the start for Ryan Coogler’s superhero blockbuster!
