1. Ankara rope necklace
This accessory is one of the most popular and the simplest one to make. To make it, you will need:
- Nylon rope
- Loop turner needle
- Pliers
- End crimp clamps for ribbon
- Ankara fabric
- Any kind of adhesive you can get, better one that works on metal and fabric
- Some kind of a clasp
- Scissors, needle and thread
Here is a step-by-step Ankara necklace tutorial:
- Measure your Ankara fabric (if your rope’s diameter is 1 cm and it is 50 cm long, you will need a 55 cm long and 6,5 cm wide piece of cloth)
- Sew the ends of the fabric so that you’ll get sort of a tunnel for your rope. Make sure you’re doing it, while the fabric is on its internal side (you’ll see, why)
- Use the loop turner to make your tunnel inside out. Now the seam is on the inside of it.
- Put the rope into the tunnel (use the loop turner again).
- Glue the ends of the tube with clamps and use pliers to squeeze them
- Attach the clasp to the clamps. Your necklace is ready!

2. Ankara button necklace
For this accessory, you will need:
- Ankara fabric buttons (you can easily make one with your leftover button and a piece of the Ankara fabric)
- Soft piece of fabric for a bib
- Ribbon
- Scissors, needle and thread
Here is how to make Ankara button necklace:
- Firstly, you need to make the foundation for the buttons. Cut out a piece of soft cloth in a shape of a pocket. Fold it lengthwise and cut out a triangle-like piece in the corner so that when you unfold it, you’d get an arch. In the end, you should get fat U-shaped piece
- Repeat the process to get the same piece. The ribbon will be holding the necklace on your neck, so you should sew it in between the two pieces, while sewing them together.
- Now it’s time to sew the buttons onto the bib. Try to find buttons with different sizes, so that you’d be able to cover all the surface of the fabric. Your necklace is basically done!
3. Ankara beaded necklace
For this exemplar of the necklace designs you’ll need:
- Rubber band
- Ankara fabric
- Beads of your choice (material and size don’t matter)
- Scissors, needle and thread
Here is step-by-step instruction for you:
- Prepare your fabric. According to the diameter of the beads and their number, measure the length of the fabric you’ll need and how wide it should be.
- Make the same tube, as for the rope necklace.
- Place the beads inside the tunnel. Make it almost full, but leave some space (about 5 cm) on each end
- Sew the ends together
- Wrap every bead with the thread. Thread needle through the space between beads after you done with each of them.
- Use a rubber band as your clasp. Use a thread to tie the end of the rubber band to one of the beads. Do the same with another end. This way you’ll get a double strand necklace.
