From iPhone 1 To iPhone 7

Apple is used to being a technology pioneer, introducing one groundbreaking discovery after another. However, there hasn’t been an Apple device as revolutionary as the iPhone. Unveiled in 2007, this smartphone paved way for hundreds of touchscreen models from other manufacturers. Still, the iPhone is going strong, and as the world is taking the first look at the brand new iPhone 7, let’s see how the iPhone changed over the years.

iPhone 1

While presenting the original iPhone in 2007, Steve Jobs announced that the new device is designed to be a blend of three gadgets: a cutting-edge mobile phone, a touchscreen iPod, and a mobile web browser. The iPhone 1 was unlike anything the public has seen before, with a 3.5-inch bright and sharp screen, 8GB of storage, and a 2MP camera. Third-party apps were not available yet, which slightly limited the capabilities of the iPhone.

In 2008 Apple significantly upgraded the iPhone, adding the 3G functionality, as well as redesigning the body and launching the App Store, which instantly became a huge selling point thanks to thousands of third-party apps. The App Store became such a success that every major manufacturer now has their own version of the store, including Google and Windows.

iPhone 3GS

A lot of diehard Apple fans felt disappointed with the release of the iPhone 3GS, as it looked and felt too similar to the previous model. However, the third generation of the iPhone was filled with subtle yet important changes. The biggest changes concerned the performance of the device and its camera, which could now record videos. The iPhone 3GS also introduced a voice control technology that Siri was later based upon.

iPhone 4

While the IPhone 3GS could be viewed as a minor upgrade, the iPhone 4 was exactly the revolution everyone was looking for. Everything has changed, from the flat design with a built-in antenna to the 5MP camera with HD video recording capabilities, not to mention the significant improvement of the phone’s performance. Another big upgrade was the high-res Retina display that set the bar high for other manufacturers.

iPhone 4S

The letter “S” in the name of the Apple devices usually signifies minor upgrades, which is why no one was really surprised to see the new iPhone 4S feature the design of the iPhone 4. The inside of the device was changed significantly, with an 8MP camera and a new A5 processor being introduced. Apple also added mind-blowing graphics capabilities, and the iPhone 4S was the first one to include Siri, a digital assistant.

iPhone 5

The 2012 release of the iPhone 5 marked Apple’s shift towards the new design, screen size, and aspect ratio. The new phone sported a 4-inch screen, a 20% lighter body, and lots of new features. Another big change was the introduction of the iOS 7, which received a revamped interface and some long anticipated functionality.

iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C

Released during the same event, these two models had some major differences. The iPhone 5S was visually undistinguishable from the iPhone 5, with the same aluminum body and iOS 7. However, the iPhone 5S was the first one to introduce the fingerprint scanner and an improved camera. iPhone 5C was Apple’s affordable alternative to the more expensive models: it was exactly like the iPhone 5, except for the plastic body.

iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

After the minor upgrades of the previous models, fans were ready for a change, and Apple’s iPhone 6 turned out to be what everyone wanted. The bigger screen, higher resolution, and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, Apple cemented its position in the smartphone market. The new models also featured a curvier body and an all-new iOS 8.

iPhone 6S and 6S Plus

The 2015 additions to Apple’s lineup shared the appearance and most major functions with their predecessors, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The most important upgrades included the new Rose Gold color, a tougher aluminum body, and numerous performance upgrades. 3D Touch technology was also a major talking point after the release.

iPhone SE

Although the new design of the iPhone 6 and 6S had its fair share of admirers, there were still users who were longing after the classic design of the iPhone 5S, which is why many critics viewed the iPhone SE as the phone with iPhone 6’s functionality in an iPhone 5S’s body with an improved battery life and affordable pricing.

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

It’s been just a week since the iPhone 7 was unveiled, but we already know every major and minor upgrade in the new model. The most noteworthy changes are the missing 3.5-mm headphone jack, the new Jet Black color, the waterproof design, and a number of transformations in the iOS 10, which is available starting September 13.
