How not to lose your head in the modern world? Protect the content of the skull! It is certainly useful, and if you will take care of your brain now, it will serve to you even when you will be 100 years old. Here are 10 things that negatively affect the brain.
1. Lack of sleep
Before discovering electricity people was addicted to diurnal rhythmes – active during the day, sleep at night.
But progress change our circade rhythmes – we often spend nights watching TV, serfing Internet or working. Lack of sleep damage our brain – it haven’t time to adopt information, gathered during the day and can not rest. Severe lack of sleep causes the phenomenon of microsleep – when in the period of wakefulness different parts of brain “asleep“. The result is that person become dispersed, motor skills become deteriorated. Regular lack of sleep causes death of neurons.
2. Lack of nutrients and energy
Junk food, lack of vitamins, skipping the daily meal cause a negative effect on our brain. For normal work our brain consume 25% of energy and a great part of nutrients from your daily food. When you are hungry, sugar level in your blood decrease, thus brain uses “reserve” way for feeding – ketones, but they are not so easy to include into neurons metabolism and interfere wiht uptake of other nutritions. Lack of nutrition and energy can cause memory problems.
3. Too much sugar and trans-fats
But not only low blood sugar harmful – if you eat too much sweets, they cause problems with protein digestion. Proteins are building bricks for all our organism. Also, today sweets contain trans-fats. Except cardiac problems, metabolites of trans-fats are neurotoxic – they can cause psychological problems.
4. Stress
Chronic stress, severe emotional stress causes not only psychological problems. Stress mediators in our organism push our nervous system to act, but when there are too much such mediators, they can break connections between neurons. That’s why we often have memory problems after exceedingly stress situations. But when stress often repeats, it can cause chronicle memory problems, reduce intellectual potential, hinders understanding of cause-and-effect relationships and the sequence of events.
5. Uncontrolled receiving of antidepressants and sleeping pills
People with insomnia, anxiety often receive some drugs without consulting with doctor. It is normal to swallow sedative pill before public speech, but some people become addicted on medication. Chronic overdosage of antidepressants and sleeping pills damage our brain even more than alcohol, – amnesia, dementia and obsessive – compulsive disorder, suicidal thoughts.
6. Smoking
All of know that smoking negatively affect our body. The main reason why nicotine is harmful to our brain is it’s vasoconstrictive effect, together with carbon dioxide from the smoke, it cause oxygen starvation in neurons. Constricted vessels bring les nutrients. in prospective, smoking increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
7. Natural illuminance
Sun giving life for all living beings. Our pineal gland react on illuminance by secreting melatonin – hormone, that controls our circadian rhythms. Also, sunlight stimulates production of serotonin, dopamine and vitamin D in our organism. Positive effect natural illuminance is good mood, cheerfulness and renewal of neural connections inside the brain.
8. Lack of water
If you drink not enough water all your body suffers. Dehydration affects our brain ability to memorise. when body suffers of dehydration, brain volume decrease, at the same time toughness of blood rises and increases level of harmful metabolites. If you drink tea, eat soup it doesn’t means that you get enough moisture per day. To prevent dehydration you should drink at least 1,5-2 liters of clean water every day.
9. Excess information
In the age of Internet, omnipresent advertisement, prevalence of intellectual work our brain is tired of memorising all this information. Often we rest by playing logical games or doing crosswords. But everyone soon or late achieve a state when brain refuse to memorise something and become resistant to new information. This state means that you need overload – your brain will be very glad when instead watching TV you’ll just walk to sleep or go for a walk.
10. Alcohol
Alcohol have sedative effect on our nervous system. Some people are trying to relax by drinking beer after work. Another reason – party and hangover is effective way to reset all problems. But be careful – alcohol damage your brain. Systematic drinking can cause vitamin deficiency, depression, ethanol in blood can pass through hematoencephalic barrier and affect your grey substance, washing out nutrients and breaking cell membrane of neurons.
11. Multitasking
Have you ever been doing many tasks at the same time?
It is normal to listen music while cleaning the room – there are different types of activity. But whe you are trying to write article, speak to your colleague and watching movie at the same time, your brain unlearns to be focused on one task for a long time. As a result, we become unable to do something without change of activity.
12. Routine
Our brain – lazybones. Doing something day by day, for example to eat only your favourite yogurt, performing the same job, dining with friend in your traditional cafe, where you memorised menu a 10 years ago – all kind of routine leads to degradation of the brain. For doing all of this and to reduce spending of energy our brain creates a sort of templates. Really, why brain should spend extra energy to do the same type of action?
The fact that the longer we use those templates, the less work of the brain.
To increase your brain plasticity you should everytime try something new, change old habits, for example, choose alternative way to buy and sell.
