1. Setting up your account
You can enjoy all kinds of content on TikTok without an account, but if you want to post your own creations, you will need a personal account. You can sign up for TikTok using your email, phone number, or log in with your other social media profiles.

TikTok will automatically assign you a username based on your email or phone number. If you don’t like the given username, you can go to your profile settings, where you can not only change your screen name, but also upload a profile photo and add your bio. To give your future followers more insight into who you are, you can upload a profile video as well.
An important thing to remember about TikTok is that by default, all new profiles are public, meaning any internet user can view your uploads if they want to. In case you want only your followers to see your videos, simply go to the Privacy section of your profile, which can be found by tapping three dots in your profile settings, to make your account private.
2. Exploring TikTok
The best way to get inspiration for your own videos and see what kind of content is popular on TikTok is to browse other people’s creations. TikTok offers two kinds of feeds: Following, where you can find posts from the people you follow, and For You, a feed where an algorithm finds videos you might enjoy based on your activity in the app.

You can teach the algorithm to understand your tastes better by tapping Not Interested on a video you don’t want to see in your feed or tapping a heart, which functions as a like on TikTok. From an individual TikTok, you can also share the video through a variety of channels, click the author’s name to see their full profile, or click on the sound icon to see the song featured in the video and view other clips that use the same track.
3. Creating your own TikToks
When you have the inspiration to create your own TikToks, you can start right away. A single TikTok video can be up to 15 seconds long, but the app allows you to combine up to 4 15-second videos, which makes the total maximum video length 1 minute. Alternatively, you can upload longer videos that have been recorded in other apps.
To record your own TikTok video, simply tap the plus sign at the bottom of the screen, which will launch the camera. Click the red recording sign to begin recording your video. If you want to create a dancing or lip-syncing clip, you can choose the track beforehand to make things easier for you. However, you can also combine the video with the track after you finish recording.

TikTok is well-known for its variety of AR effects you can add to your videos. You can find them by tapping the Effects button on the left side of the screen. The special effects include effects that beautify the person or change the environment. There are also numerous filters you can use to alter the look of your video.
If you want to record a dancing video or another clip where you cannot hold the recording button for 15 seconds straight, you can use the highly acclaimed TikTok’s timer feature. When your clip is ready, you can add a few finishing touches and upload it.
4. Promoting your TikToks
TikTok videos are nothing without viewers and TikTok profiles are nothing without followers. TikTok is an incredibly popular platform, but you can still achieve recognition as long as you create appealing content and promote your clips using these three tips:
- Use relevant hashtags in your videos to attract TikTok users who are browsing the content using specific hashtags.
- Choose interesting and popular tracks for your videos that will make people who use the same tracks check out your creations.
- Take part in TikTok challenges, which are regularly created by the service and can be found by tapping the magnifying glass at the bottom of the screen.
