Not everyone knows this, but there are numerous emergency agencies in Nigeria that can help in difficult, even life-threatening situations. However, even fewer people know how to actually reach them. Through popular media, especially coming from the US, we are conditioned to think of 911 as the primary emergency number, but the truth is that it doesn’t work in Nigeria.

At the end of 2019, Nigerian officials launched a universal emergency line that every Nigerian could call to request assistance in case of emergency. This is a toll-free number that can be dialled from any mobile device. The 112 helpline is being operated in 18 Emergency Communication Centres, or ECC, that are available in the FCT as well as Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Cross Rivers, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kwara, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, and Plateau states.

The 112 emergency service was already very helpful since its launch in November of 2019, but it has once again proven to be particularly useful since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria. With a universally accessible emergency line, Nigerian citizens finally have a place where they can get timely assistance in any COVID-19-related situation.
