1. Feeding

Food has a vital importance to a baby. Starting from birth and until the baby turns approximately 6 months old, its main source of food is breast milk, formula, or a combination of both. Regardless of what you’ll choose for your baby, being regularly fed is the number one condition for healthy development.

If you plan to breastfeed, you may need a breast pump and breast milk storage containers for the times when you need to leave the baby with a nanny or family members for longer than 2 hours. Bottle feeding requires bottles, a cleaning brush, bottle sterilizer, and bottle warmer, although the last two items are optional.

Even if you’re determined to exclusively breastfeed the baby, you’ll still need at least one bottle to give the baby water when it’s hot outside. Plus, in order to keep the baby clean during feeding, you’re going to need bibs and burp cloths. Here are some prices for the feeding items:

  • Breast pump: 10,000-35,000.
  • Feeding bottle: 1,000-₦3,500.
  • Bottle sterilizer: 7,000-₦20,000.
  • Bottle warmer: 3,500-12.000.

2. Nursery

While some parents prefer to co-sleep with their newborn children, it is better for babies to sleep in their own rooms or at least in a separate cot. That is why an important part of the list of baby items in Nigeria is everything that your nursery needs to have.

At the very least, you’ll need a cot with appropriately-sized bed sheets. There is no need to buy pillows for a newborn, since babies don’t need them until they turn 2-3 years old. Blankets are also not mandatory, so you can save a bit of money there.

Some parents invest in a special baby mattress or cocoon, which is believed to help the baby fall asleep faster and sleep better. A baby monitor is also a good idea if you’re planning to let the baby sleep separately.

A changing table or changing mat is essential for comfortably and safely changing your baby’s diapers and clothes. Look for changing tables with plenty of drawers to conveniently store all of the baby items you buy. Check out these prices of baby things in Nigeria:

  • Baby cot: ₦30,000-₦100,000
  • Changing mat: 10,000-15,000
  • Changing table: 20,000-40,000
  • Baby monitor: 15,000-80,000

3. Clothes

The price of baby wardrobe in Nigeria often startles expectant parents, but the truth is that you don’t need too much clothes for the first few months. Babies grow very quickly and can change sizes every month; plus, there is no way to tell how big your baby is going to be when it’s born.

You’re going to need several short-sleeved and long-sleeved bodysuits, one or two sleepsuits, several pairs of socks, a couple of beanies, a pair of mittens to prevent a newborn baby from scratching itself, and, optionally, a sleeping bag if your baby tends to wake itself up with spontaneous hand and leg movements.

  • Bodysuit: 500
  • Sleepsuit: 1000
  • Beanie: 700-1,500
  • Socks: 500 for 3 pairs

4. Travel and safety

One of the key safety items that are a true must-have is a car seat that is designed specifically for newborns. You need to have a car seat already when you’re taking the baby home from the hospital, and many parents also use it at home instead of a bouncer

.

For long-distance travels and everyday walks you have several options. You can buy a pram, install the car seat onto matching pram wheels, or choose a baby wrap or baby carrier – some of them can be used since birth, and others are allowed to use from 5-6 months.

  • Newborn car seat: 15,000-25,000
  • Pram: 25,000-70,000
  • Baby carrier: 5,000-15,000

5. Baby care

One of the biggest expenses on the list of baby things to buy for an expectant mother are diapers. We don’t recommend buying too many diapers of one brand, since it may turn out that they’re not a good fit for your baby. Plus, as you already know, babies grow faster than you expect!

In addition to diapers, you will also need disposable sheets to place on a changing mat and wet wipes to clean the baby when there is no immediate access to running water. Many new mothers prefer to wash their baby’s face with a cotton ball and water, so you can get some super soft cotton balls for that purpose.

If you plan to take the baby for long walks, you can also invest in a diaper bag that will allow you to comfortably carry everything you need for the baby, including diapers, wipes, spare clothes, changing sheets, and food.

A pacifier is another must-have: you’ll need the main pacifier and a spare one, plus a pacifier container for travels. Moreover, you will need a hair comb or brush and a nasal aspirator for suctioning the mucus out of your baby’s nose.

Eventually your baby will start teething, so, to alleviate the discomfort, get a couple of high quality teethers: if they’re filled with liquid, stick them into a fridge for an hour before giving it to your baby to give them a pleasantly cool sensation. And don’t forget to get a baby thermometer!

  • Diapers: 1,000-25,000
  • Wipes: ₦500-₦14,000
  • Diaper bag: 6,000-12,000
  • Pacifier: 700-2,000
  • Teether: 1,000-2,000
  • Thermometer: 1,000-₦3,000

6. Bath

Giving your baby regular baths isn’t just a way of keeping it clean – it’s also a way to let the baby relax, get used to water, and enjoy a new form of communication with the parent. During the first few months of your baby’s life you can use a special plastic bathtub and a soft towel.

In order to make the bathing even more comfortable, you can use a bath stand that supports an anatomical position for bathing. Later you can move on to bathing your baby in a regular bathtub. Additionally, you can use a rubber mat on the bottom of the tub to prevent slipping.

Babies don’t need too many cosmetic products: for the first few months you can get away with a 2-in-1 shampoo and body wash, a baby cream for treating rashes and keeping the skin moisturized, and baby oil that you can use after bath.

  • Bath stand: 5,000-20,000
  • Towel: 800-₦3,500
  • Shampoo and body wash: 1,500
  • Baby cream: 2,000

7. Activity

Your newborn will spend most of its time sleeping and eating, but it doesn’t mean they cannot enjoy a bit of activity. The first toy your baby will need is a hanging mobile decoration – it can be electronic and play calming music in addition to entertaining the baby with the moving shapes.

Another helpful activity item is a bouncer, which can be used for rocking the baby to sleep or letting it spend quality time with the family. When the baby turns about 2 months old, you can get an play mat, where your little one will enjoy trying to reach the toys and will learn how to hold their head and roll over.

  • Musical mobile: 7,000-15,000
  • Bouncer: 5,000-16,000
  • Play mat: 6,000-20,000
